"As Chair of the FEMM committee (2004-2009), I had occasion to encounter politically sensitive reports. Thanks to the cooperation of all political groups, FEMM enjoyed a positive image. I was twice the rapporteur for such a report. For this reason, I think that I know this problem, and I am thus compelled to vote against this resolution. In fact, it extends beyond the original resolution. Transgender issues are taken out of their political and institutional context. The recommendations referred to in paragraph 2 are unrealistic. Their introduction would require a special DG. I quote our distinguished colleague, Astrid Lulling: ‘Everything that is exaggerated is insignificant’. The issue of equal opportunities between women and men is an important issue that is close to my heart. It must therefore be handled with sensitivity and foresight. So that we move forward in equal opportunities in the form of the vision of sustainable development of European nations and in the work of the committees, I support the introduction of family mainstreaming in order to achieve real and sustainable equal opportunities for all citizens. Because we really cannot avoid the issue of the demographic future of Europe’s nations. And this is despite the fact that demography is key to the future of society."@en1
