I voted in favour of the proposal for a Council decision concerning the Framework Programme of the European Atomic Energy Community for nuclear research and training activities (2012-2013). The Euratom Framework Programme for the 2012-2013 period is aimed at research activities in the areas of nuclear energy (fission and fusion) and radiological protection, and creates financing instruments and the relevant budget for direct and indirect actions involving research and development activities in this field. Nuclear energy will continue to play a strategic role in the EU’s energy mix, helping achieve the EU’s objective on reducing greenhouse gas emissions, increasing energy security and diversifying the EU’s energy supply sources. Nuclear energy must be used subject to accepting strict commitments concerning the responsible use of nuclear energy, while taking into account the safety and physical and radiological protection aspects. I think that the objective of the European Sustainable Nuclear Industrial Initiative (ESNII), which is the deployment of Generation IV Fast Neutron Reactors with a closed fuel cycle between 2035 and 2040, can help diversify the EU’s energy supply sources and ensure that nuclear energy is used in future under conditions of maximum safety."@en1
