"Mr President, ladies and gentlemen, we know that the International Criminal Court (ICC) is the first permanent international judicial body capable of trying individuals for genocide, crimes against humanity and war crimes. Over the years, the ICC has made a major contribution to the creation of a high-level system for the protection of fundamental human rights, intervening in cases where highly damaging crimes, in terms of both the crime and the number of victims, have gone unpunished. Unfortunately, the ICC currently finds itself at a critical juncture, for political and financial reasons. This is why Parliament has spoken today in order to emphasise strongly the need for complete and immediate cooperation between the Member States, and not just some of them. Each Member State must be ready to make its contribution to the judicial body. Only this way, I believe, will it be possible to make the fight against impunity for these terrible crimes more effective."@en1
