"Mr President, ladies and gentlemen, thank you that such a large number of you supported this initiative. In the current legislative term, this is the declaration that has obtained the most signatures. It is a record for this sitting. Many thanks. The declaration was the initiative of my colleague, Mr Marinescu, who had been approached by the Romanian National Association for the Deaf. In other words, the initiative came from them, and the approach taken by Mr Marinescu was exemplary: he contacted me as a person affected. This is what the principle ‘nothing about us without us’ is all about. I hope that this written declaration will put greater pressure on the European institutions to take more effective action to ensure that barriers to emergency assistance are eliminated. We have the technology. It is available; we just need to use it. In this case I, as a deaf person, will not only be able to call for help for myself; I will be able to call for help for you. This is another reason why I would like to thank you for supporting this initiative. In the gallery, there are deaf people who have lobbied on this issue and I think they deserve a big round of applause, but using sign language, not hand-clapping. By applauding in sign language, we offer our thanks to those in the gallery for their work."@en1
