"Mr President, I am very familiar with the situation of the Roma in Slovakia, because where I live in eastern Slovakia they are most numerous. I agree with those who say that there is discrimination against the Roma. However, we must also acknowledge that they themselves often contribute to discrimination against them. They are responsible for not integrating, for not educating their children, for neglecting their health, and so on. However at the same time we must say that not all Roma are happy with their lives – they want a better life, they want to work and want a better future for their children.
Last week, I visited a community in the town of Moldava nad Bodvou, where the shacks of four families were burned down in August. Thanks to contributions by the town, which leased them land, and to a non-profit making organisation, the Roma themselves are now building proper houses from reclaimed building materials. I described the efforts of these particular families in a short document which shows that the Roma want a better life, but do not know how to help themselves. So if we want to solve the Roma problem, we have to solve it together with them."@en1
