"About time too. It is 10 years now since Europe set out the rules to move towards a single railway area. Yet there has been no real progress. Rail expansion has come to a halt. The rail industry has even become the only industry to have lost market shares in recent years. The explosion of low-cost offers for short and medium haul routes has a lot to do with it. However, the train meets a number of our demands: means of transport that are more environmentally-friendly (Europe 2020 goals), more profitable, involved in the sustainable development of our territories while offering solutions to the increased need for speed and intermodality, for both passengers and freight. Today, we now realise that the train was a safe and valid means of transport. We now need to put together the appropriate legal instruments. This is the spirit of this legislative package."@en1
