Rail transport has still not fully developed its potential at a European level. There is still too much fragmentation and not enough competition, which translates into a disadvantage for all citizens wishing to use this mode of transport which is safe, economical and has a low environmental impact. European mobility is becoming more and more closely linked, and this requires greater harmonisation between the differing sets of national rules, with the ultimate aim of helping the service users, in other words the passengers, by reducing ticket prices and ensuring smoother journeys within the various EU countries. This report highlights these and other priorities worthy of support, which is why I decided to vote in favour of it."@en1
