"Education in European History is an absolute must in developing a sense of belonging and in preserving a common memory. In this sense, the major sites associated with major events that have made Europe what it is must be recognised and valued among citizens. Only a European initiative could provide a framework capable of meeting these goals. I therefore welcome the adoption in plenary of Ms Paliadeli’s report on the European Heritage Label. This initiative, which was originally intergovernmental, had to be rolled out across the Union to ensure recognition of its added value and thereby its effectiveness. I particularly welcome the proposed labelling of transnational sites. They will be best placed to represent this shared history and to encourage intercultural dialogue. Finally, lowering the frequency of selection to every two years is quite sensible as it avoids excessive labelling and thereby guarantees the quality of this label in the long run."@en1
