"The creation of a European Heritage Label puts out a strong message. It is essential to raise awareness of European history and the history of the European people so that the younger generation feel fully engaged in the European project. It is more than just drawing up a list of our finest sites to promote them, it is more about putting in place a genuine educational project sending out a message of peace and democracy. Beauty or excellence is a gift given from one to another. The other being, to some extent, the world.
This label is much more than taking a look at the past, it is also very much a stamp on our present. While some harp on about times of crisis, hardly conducive to the development of such a label, I believe that continually chipping away at matters of culture is a grave mistake.
Culture is the cornerstone of positive identities, which defines both the individual and the collective, which makes us exist, as mankind and as a people. In a way, it is also a kind of mental glue for social cohesion. Culture is the foundation on which we build our organisation and our work."@en1
