"Given the fact that the African, Caribbean, Pacific – European Union (ACP-EU) Joint Parliamentary Assembly (JPA) is the largest parliamentary body encompassing countries of both the North and the South, more attention must be paid to the outcomes of its work. It should be noted that the Assembly has played and continues to play a key role in monitoring the negotiations on Economic Partnership Agreements (EPAs). We should welcome the fact that an open and democratic dialogue between the European Union and the ACP countries on the Cotonou Partnership Agreement has finally begun. I believe that the parliaments of the ACP countries should be given greater assistance so that they can exercise effective democratic scrutiny. Furthermore, we should also increase efforts to achieve the objectives of the Millennium Development Goals as soon as possible."@en1
