"Mr President, climate change has been a key political topic for some years now. It is obvious that CO
emissions need to be reduced.
I should like to make two comments regarding this, however. Firstly, I feel that it is completely wrong to focus essentially only on CO
as an indicator when looking at climate change. Climate change does not have only one cause, and therefore it cannot be combated simply by reducing CO
. In my opinion, we should instead be putting conservation of our natural resources at the heart of our agenda.
Secondly, there is little point in the European Union trying to achieve agreed targets if third countries are lagging far behind the targets they have set themselves. That is another problem we need to address."@en1
