"I am particularly pleased with the European Heritage Label initiative as I believe that a strong European Union can only arise from strong common foundations and from a common understanding of each other. European heritage is an indispensable part of European unity, as our Union is based on a shared historical belief and struggle for the principles of democracy, freedom, and human rights. While the historical experiences of our nations may differ, we are all Europeans with the same fundamental values. It is important that we pay tribute to the events, people and places in our common past which have helped us to develop this unique union. Our unity in diversity is what makes us strong, and a common understanding of our neighbours and ourselves can only strengthen this bond. Places such as Athens, the birthplace of democracy, or events such as the fall of the Berlin Wall and the 1989 Baltic Way, where, in spite of overwhelming force, people demanded freedom and the reunification of Europe, connect us all. Commemoration not only helps Europe understand its common past and destiny; it also helps to highlight the common goals and common values of our nations."@en1
