"Madam President, in a time of multiple crises, it is important that we finally close the debate that has been going on for four consecutive European Union presidencies and make the awarding of the European Heritage Label possible in practice as well. The spirit of the label would strengthen our values and our sense of belonging to the EU. By acknowledging diversity, we still strengthen intercultural dialogue. To emphasise this is particularly important for all of us. By laying down criteria for the selection of sites, and through the scope of the geographic criteria and clear and simplified provisions, we are taking steps towards citizens that must meet high expectations.
It is important to finally transform this intergovernmental initiative into an official EU action. Objects that can be grouped on the basis of a specific theme and can apply together for the label represent an opening up towards young people compared to other initiatives in the field of cultural heritage. These are signs of caring, of which our youths are in great need."@en1
