"Madam President, it is right that we are seeking common European roots, but let us not seek them selectively. If we do really want to return to our shared European heritage, then let us say boldly that it was, to a large extent, a Christian heritage. I am very glad about the voices in Parliament which say we have much in common, but it was also in this Parliament that very many people did not want the preamble to the European Constitution, which contained a reference to the Christian heritage of our continent, or what we call the ‘old’ continent. There is a certain hypocrisy in this. I very much welcome initiatives of this kind, by means of which young generations of Polish, French and German Europeans – Europeans of course, but not Europeans as such – can be shown their past. It is a step in the right direction, although I definitely would not want this initiative to involve too much bureaucracy, because this would only bring about a result opposite to the one intended."@en1
