"Madam President, I would like to congratulate the European Parliament and, in particular, the Chair of the Committee on Culture and Education, Ms Pack, as well as the rapporteur, Ms Paliadeli, and the co-rapporteurs, for the high-quality work accomplished on the European Heritage Label, and for having reached an agreement with the Council for adoption of the text in early second reading. As you know, this proposal was one of the very first to be adopted by the new Commission just after it took office, and it is one of our priorities in the field of culture for the years to come. Through this label, our aim is to give European citizens, especially young people, new opportunities to learn about our common yet diverse cultural heritage and about the history and the building of the European Union. I strongly believe that this will contribute to bringing European citizens closer to the European Union. The European Heritage Label will also help to increase cultural tourism, bringing economic benefits as well. The Commission is firmly convinced that the compromise that was reached is very positive for the three institutions, and that it is fully in line with the ambitions we all share for the Europe Heritage Label. This compromise will ensure the quality and the prestige of the label, which are absolutely primordial for the long-term success of the action. We also appreciate that the rules and procedures were kept as clear, light and flexible as possible so that they can be easily understood by all European citizens and easily implemented by the Member States and by the European Union. I would therefore like to thank Parliament once again for the excellent cooperation we had on this file."@en1
