"Mr President, the numbers we have heard today are certainly alarming. However, I would like to draw your attention to one aspect of this discussion, which is that Commissioner Šemeta, at last week’s meeting of the Committee on Budgetary Control, named three states that are apparently most at fault in respect of cohesion policy: Italy, Spain and the Czech Republic. As I hail from the Czech Republic, and as the Czech Republic is mentioned in this context for the first time, I tried to find out the details behind these statements. The response is simply that 16 projects or payments were audited in the Czech Republic, and four of these were classified among the seriously quantifiable errors. I would not like to cast doubt on the work of the Court of Auditors, of which I have a very high opinion, but I would like to call on the Commission to be more restrained in its statements, as they need to be substantiated first. I welcome greater mutual awareness in these matters, of course, and perhaps much greater awareness."@en1
