"Mr President, ladies and gentlemen, in the usual way, the Court of Auditors is presenting the results of its good work in the form of the annual report for 2010. For those who have been observing this process for a long time, it is not surprising that the Court of Auditors has produced a negative result for 2010. In these very difficult economic times, this amounts to a confession of failure by the European Union, because it clearly indicates that taxpayers’ money is being used illegally or even wasted. The error rate in the EU budget amounts to 3.7%, but this figure can be increased, because the error rate for cohesion, energy and transport stands at 7.7% and this is once again higher than the previous year. In the cases audited by the Court of Auditors, the error rate is 49%, which is equivalent to every other case. We are talking here about the improper use of taxpayers’ money amounting to billions of euro. I am therefore calling on the Commission to put an end to these abuses immediately."@en1
