"Madam President, a few basic things need to be said about the EU’s standpoint ahead of the forthcoming conference in Durban.
In the first place, the Union must formulate its position in a clear and timely manner. We must present our solutions and we must be very consistent in communicating and promoting them.
We must also come out clearly in support of continuing the Kyoto Protocol, as its effectiveness will expire at the end of next year. This is an absolutely clear demand and a wholly unambiguous indicator of the success or failure of the Durban Summit. If the Kyoto Protocol does not continue after 2012, Durban will go down in history as the scene of the destruction of global efforts to bring climate change under control. At the same time, I firmly believe that this would be a sorry testimony to the declining influence of the EU in this area. In the meantime, we are optimists and we believe not only that the Union will become a leader, but also that the conference will go well."@en1
