"Europe has two important features nowadays: an ageing population and migration flows both from within and outside the EU. During the current financial year, Member States have allocated EUR 30 billion from the Structural Funds to measures relating to demographic change. I find interesting the idea of treating demographic change also as an opportunity, rather than only as a threat. This can be achieved by dealing with the problem at regional level. The Commission has proposed support for young families provided by high-quality child care and educational institutions, as well as through solutions for the generation in the middle and the elderly. Therefore, it is right for us to aim to adapt the Structural Funds better to these challenges. Towns and villages must be attractive to their inhabitants, have the necessary infrastructure to support children and families, and provide multi-generational housing. A reduction in youth unemployment is desirable through projects financed by the ESF."@en1
