"I am full of praise for the report which has been debated and adopted, and for the discussion we have had in Parliament on this subject. I cannot imagine that during an economic crisis, we should not tackle the growth of poverty, which has been caused mainly by rising unemployment and falling support for the poorest. We have allocated huge sums to the support of banks and a variety of financial institutions, so we must also find many times smaller amounts for the fight against poverty. In this work, we must pay particular attention to children and people who are unemployed, homeless or excluded, and this is just for today, because with tomorrow in mind, we must give an important place to education, support for families with many children and ending unemployment. Put simply, what is important is economic development and tackling the crisis.
Against this backdrop, the lack of action and the lack of a decision on the part of the Council of the European Union on free distribution of food to the poorest is incomprehensible, and we should be ashamed about this. The attitude of some Member States, which are blocking a solution to this problem, is also incomprehensible."@en1
