"The rise in life expectancy, which affects almost the entirety of the population of Europe, forces us to think about new challenges and about considering the possibilities without limiting ourselves to avoiding the risks. A demographic change, indeed, leads to reflections and new strategies regarding European Structural Funds anticipated for the development of urban and rural areas. Evaluating, in the light of the new figures on life expectancy and birth rates, the policies relating to the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) and, more generally, those that concern mobility and social cohesion, is more necessary than ever. However, this evaluation must take place under the watchful eye of the authorities in individual Member States and regions. Mr Westphal’s report, for which I have voted in favour, reflects the need to tackle the theme of demographic change, in the diversity and complexity of its elements, keeping in mind the repercussions it can have on the economy, employment and mobility, and those that are closely linked to the citizens of the EU."@en1
