"As events this year in Japan show, nuclear safety remains a particularly relevant issue both in the European Union and beyond. This is particularly important in Lithuania, near whose borders there are plans to build two nuclear power plants. In the event of accidents at these plants, the whole of Vilnius – the capital of an EU Member State – would have to be evacuated. The potential for EU scientists in this area is huge. I therefore particularly welcome the position relating to the strengthening of research in the field of radiation protection. Such knowledge would help to establish the highest standards of nuclear security and would offer better protection from the negative impact of radiation on the environment and human health."@en1
