"Considering that the beekeeping sector is an integral part of European agriculture as it provides primary or additional income for over 600 000 citizens of the European Union, that it offers vital services for agriculture through pollination, and that it contributes to the maintenance of biodiversity, the recent increase in bee mortality deserves attention. Although the precise reasons for their mortality still remain unclear, one should take into account that one of the main barriers to effective action against excessive bee mortality is the lack of reliable and comparable data on the number of hives, beekeepers and colony losses in the EU. Given the need to apply an effective and harmonised surveillance system in Europe in order to estimate the extent of bee mortality and to develop more accurate knowledge on the extent and causes of the losses, I am expressing my vote in favour, with additional consideration for the possibility of developing new medicines."@en1
