"Beekeeping plays a crucial role in the sustainable development of rural areas and provides income, directly or indirectly, for over 600 000 citizens. The report emphasises the need to reverse the worrying trend of increasing bee mortality and the decline in the number of beekeepers in Europe, which could have a serious impact on food production. An estimated 84% of plant species and 76% of food production in Europe depend on pollination by bees. Therefore, it needs: to increase the level of support for honeybee health-related research on disease prevention and control, particularly the impact of environmental factors on the bee colony immune system; continuous research and development of veterinary medical products for current EU honeybee disease-causing agents; more coordinated action at EU level with a network of national surveillance systems and harmonised standards for data collection; more flexible rules for the authorisation and availability of veterinary products for honeybees; to encourage a greater degree of information-sharing among Member States, beekeepers, farmers, industry and scientists on ecotoxicological factors affecting honeybee health; adequate training for beekeepers on disease prevention, as well as for farmers on safe use of plant protection products; to boost financial aid for apiculture under the new CAP after 2013"@en1
