"I voted for this report because, in my opinion, there were certain shortcomings in the Commission’s proposals on combating poverty and social exclusion, and the European Parliament’s proposals could eliminate them. I am particularly delighted that the report focuses on the issue of the working poor. In my opinion, the main cause for the spread of this phenomenon is that the minimum wage is set too low in the Member States. This must be debated more widely in future, both in Brussels and the Member States, because it is the first and most effective means of reducing the level of poverty throughout the EU. I am also pleased that the report draws attention to the issue of poverty among elderly women. In this context, the proposal to consider the validation of leave for those caring for family members throughout the EU seems very sensible. Such a decision would allow the problem of calculating women’s length of service to be resolved because currently, women caring for relatives and family members lose years out of their length of service, and their pensions subsequently suffer as a result. I also agree with the idea of considering the question of setting minimum pensions throughout the EU."@en1
