"I voted in favour of Mr Triantaphyllides’ report on a new strategy for consumer policy, for which I acted as rapporteur for the Group of the European People’s Party (Christian Democrats). This report sets a well-defined path for the Consumer Agenda that the European Commission will propose at the start of next year. This includes creating responsible consumers, providing them with better information, ensuring the safety of the products available to them, quickly implementing the existing legislation and ensuring that all players are aware of their rights and responsibilities: these must be the priorities for European and national legislators, but also for companies and consumer associations in the coming years. Above all, I believe that it is a good time to call for real discussions to find a fair balance between the level of information that the consumer really needs, the use to which this will be put when making purchases, and the administrative and financial costs this will entail for companies. The policies that we adopt must give consumers the keys to understand the existing rules and to exercise free choice using clear, useful and truly comparable information."@en1
