"I voted in favour of this report because I strongly believe in the need to tackle this social plague in a coherent manner. Eradicating poverty and avoiding the resulting social exclusion is one of the duties of all Member States, which must protect the human rights of their citizens. Therefore, Parliament and the Commission ought to harden the political commitment assumed under the Lisbon strategy, thereby making a decisive impact on reducing poverty. Poverty is a problem that affects various aspects of the social, economic and political life of an individual and, hence, I think an integrated approach could provide a suitable way to ensure respect for the needs of individuals. In order to guarantee indiscriminate access to rights, services and resources, some measures need to be adopted in order to monitor the Member States’ pursuit of the established targets, facilitate the use of open cooperation, create jobs and establish a minimum income."@en1
