"I voted for the resolution on online gambling. Online gambling is becoming increasingly popular and represents EUR 10 billion in Europe. This new economic sector must be regulated to prevent fraud and illegal practices, which may affect our citizens. It is also necessary to take account of vulnerable people, who may easily enter into a relationship of harmful dependence on gambling and betting, especially since the Internet facilitates their access. These areas remain national competences, the Member States being in charge of public policy and public health. However, by virtue of the transnational nature of the Internet, it is also appropriate to strengthen cooperation between the Member States. It is a matter of improving the security of payments and the fight against illegal operations and of jointly reflecting on the problems of addiction."@en1
