"State aid rules are often controversial and cause a great deal of uncertainty, particularly for governments and public bodies. The case of the Royal Mail in the UK is just one example of how a lack of confidence in these rules can prolong and complicate decision making, to the detriment of employees, taxpayers and the service-using public. I am therefore pleased to have voted for this report, which calls for a firm legal framework for public ‘services of general economic interest (SGEI)’, which include social services, health services and public transport. The European Commission promised action to strengthen the position of these services, and we hope to see this when new State aid rules are proposed this year."@en1
