"In the proposed amendments, Parliament is calling for increased ‘investment in human capital and actions aimed at addressing the risk of skills shortages in the coming years (for example, grants to researchers in the nuclear field) and the consequent loss of leadership for the Union’. In the light of the most recent nuclear disaster at Fukushima, greater attention needs to be paid to nuclear safety in this area and in the basic research referred to by the Commission. It is essential for us to follow up on reports indicating that safety-related maintenance is being outsourced to external companies and that their employees are being prevented from reporting safety shortcomings. I welcome the proposed reinforcement of the networks for measuring radioactivity in the environment. In this area, however, coordination and cooperation at a European level leaves a lot to be desired. Many of the problems faced by the nuclear industry, such as the disposal of radioactive waste, improvements in the procedures for managing nuclear disasters and, for example, the decontamination of polluted soil, remain unresolved. As a result of all these problems and the fact that I am opposed to the promotion of nuclear power, I have voted against this report."@en1
