"Madam President, one of the noticeable changes in my country in recent years is the closure of so many public houses and the opening of betting shops. Side by side with that has been the growth of online betting particularly, as many people have pointed out, amongst young people. It is a worrying trend and it is one that needs to be contained. You also have the possibility – indeed the probability – of illegal online gambling which is used to launder money, etc. So there is definitely a need for tighter regulation for a number of reasons: firstly, so that those who are providing the activity, particularly sports bodies, can get something back in return; secondly, as has been pointed out, to deal with addiction, rather than leave it to Member States on their own; and thirdly, of course, to control it so that it is legal and not illegal. All those matters are important. Cross-border mutual state cooperation is very important."@en1
