"Madam President, I welcome this discussion on online gambling. What is of most concern when one considers online gambling is the increasing ease of access to online gambling sources via the Internet, interactive TV and apps for smartphones. Gambling seems to be everywhere. You cannot escape advertising for betting in newspapers and television, at sporting occasions, and it now seems that there is very much a cultural acceptance of this as a fun thing to do. Sadly, while some people may get enjoyment, there are, for many, the miseries that online gambling brings. In September 2008, a report by the Gambling Commission in the United Kingdom showed that between 10% and 14% of young people are at risk of developing gambling problems, while between 5% and 7% were said to be problem gamblers. The studies examined by the Commission categorised those young people as under the age of 18. This is a shocking statistic, but not surprising."@en1
