"Madam President, we are all aware that demographic change is presenting us with a wide range of challenges. In rural areas in particular, it is important for us to put in place concrete measures which will allow us to make good use of the opportunities that will undoubtedly accompany this change. This is all about making rural areas as attractive as possible. First and foremost, this means providing sufficient jobs for younger people in order to counteract the trend for migration away from these areas.
In addition, public bodies must adjust to the needs of an ageing population. Our rural regions must remain a home for the people who live there. Therefore, cohesion policy must make a significant contribution in this area in future. Nevertheless, it will be important, in future, to weigh up the requirements that we are able to meet against those that we simply cannot fulfil."@en1
