"Madam President, I would like to say that I voted for this report because a dwindling working population and ageing workforce will mark the demographic trends in the EU in the coming years. In light of this, the lack of effective measures for maintaining quality of life and social integration may have an adverse impact on social security systems. In the EU, pension fund costs account, on average, for 43% of the gross expenditure on social welfare services. The potential offered by the elderly must be utilised. At the same time, I think that strategies are needed to encourage the birth rate and migration. These issues must be addressed using a coordinated approach involving all European, national and regional authorities. Romania has more pensioners than employees, which means that its pension system will be at risk in the future."@en1
