"Firstly, I would like to say that cross-border cooperation is very important to us. It has proved to be extremely useful, productive and forward-looking. More and more regions are identifying a need for cross-border, transregional cooperation. That is the reason why, in our statement of estimates, we have proposed an increase of around 30% in this area. I know that this corresponds with Parliament’s view and I hope that the Member States see things in the same way. This has not always been the case in the past, but in the interim, we have completed many successful projects which the individual Member States have ultimately benefited from. The strategy for the Danube region, like all macro-regional strategies, is characterised by the fact that existing regional and national structural programmes should be used for projects which are implemented in the context of a macro-regional strategy, for example, in the Danube region. This is why it is a good thing that we have started these strategies in the current period. It will be the job of the individual stakeholders in the relevant Member States to ensure in future that certain parts of the programmes are assigned to projects which can be implemented within the framework of the strategy for the Danube region, so that we have a clear picture at the end of the planning process of how many of the Member States are actually prepared to provide funding for macro-regional strategies of this kind. For example, in the strategy for the Baltic region, we are currently in a situation where almost all the financing comes from the cross-border programmes. In the long term, that is obviously not enough to ensure the lasting success of programmes of this kind. Therefore, we need to include the relevant operational programmes."@en1
