"The proposal, put like this, recognises the role of tree plantations in the environment as the crop rotation measure is not proposed. However, the measure that involves keeping 7% of the farm for ecological focus areas can easily be applied to tree plantations, because zones and areas between rows of trees or forest borders can easily be kept under grass. This is a system that works well in fruit tree production, for example, which is part of the technology and which also has a positive impact thanks to keeping certain strips of land under grass.
Therefore, if there are areas of land in an olive plantation which, after every two or three rows, are kept under grass, this can benefit production and, in any case, will not harm it. Farmers do not need to cut down trees and, furthermore, the 7% can be met. Therefore, 7% over a plantation, where a strip after every third or fourth row remains under grass, will be sufficient. This will be the only greening measure planned for a farm of this nature as tree plantation is recognised in itself as having a positive effect in reducing CO
