"At the outset, I would like to congratulate Mr Daerden sincerely for a comprehensive report. Today, we are richer for the achievements of the first convention of the European platform for cooperation organised by the Commission and the Polish Presidency in October this year in Kraków. The convention has shown that national objectives relating to combating poverty are still insufficient to lift 20 million Europeans out of poverty and social exclusion. This entails the need to revise the objectives and the national reform programmes which, in future, will be the basis of operational programmes. The convention emphasised the need to focus interventions on areas such as child poverty, youth unemployment and the situation of the elderly, as well as the need for greater involvement of young people in decision-making processes. The most effective way out of poverty is employment. I therefore believe that support for small and medium-sized enterprises is of essential significance. The achievements of the convention indicate that our colleague Mr Daerden’s report reflects the future activities of the platform well."@en1
