"I think that the Commission’s lack of concern regarding the social implications of the recovery programmes implemented in the European Union is clear. The conservative right has different priorities to the 116 million people who face the risk of poverty and to the 42 million who live in conditions of severe poverty and cannot afford the necessities for a decent life. It is disgusting that the banking sector is much more important to Europe’s decision makers than the fact that more than a quarter of the EU’s population is faced with the scourge of poverty.
Poverty and its consequences, which include long-term unemployment affecting one in three unemployed, homelessness, a lack of access to medical care, dropping out of school and social exclusion of the elderly and people with disabilities, are factors which destroy social cohesion between generations and professional groups. I am worried that the platform proposed by the Commission does not take into account the need to combat the increased vulnerability of women, especially of single mothers and elderly women.
I call on the Commission to become more involved in supporting European citizens in the fight against poverty and social exclusion. I think that a realistic analysis needs to be carried out of the chance of reducing the number of people exposed to the risk of poverty by 20 million, in keeping with the Europe 2020 strategy."@en1
