"Madam President, I would like to point out that Mr Daerden is correct in anticipating multidimensional consequences when it comes to poverty. I would like to add one comment to this. Social exclusion has far-reaching implications for the future of democracy, and I believe that we should take this fact into account as well. As regards the report, I have two comments. In 2008, we knew of 80 million people living in poverty, while today we are already talking about 100 million, of whom 20 million are children. It is obvious that the fight against child poverty must take priority, because here the human resources of the future are at stake. What about the others, however? It is also evident that extreme poverty in Europe is unbearable and indeed verges on the violation of human rights. I believe that this, too, should be reflected in our priorities. The other comment I would briefly like to make concerns the monitoring of poverty. After all, even now, we are working with three-year-old data and do not really have information on how the crisis has affected poverty trends. It has probably exacerbated extreme poverty, too. In this respect, I would like to point out that it is not enough to monitor relative poverty only, as there are vast differences between individual countries, and if we were to derive the concept of minimum income from this, we could create major pitfalls."@en1
