"Madam President, I should like to express my personal anxiety and concern about the social situation that is arising and escalating both in my country, in Greece, and in most of the Member States, as painted in dark colours by the International Labour Organisation and illustrated by every social and economic indicator: spiralling unemployment, especially among young people, 80 million citizens at risk of poverty, a problem which is increasing daily, a drastic deterioration in living conditions and an unequal distribution of the tax burden. We all need to realise that the social fabric is unravelling and the risk of social disruption in the Union is increasing. The objectives of macro-economic stability may be necessary and painful efforts to achieve fiscal adjustment may be imposed; however, the pledge which all of us made within the framework of the EU 2020 strategy to combat poverty and increase quality employment cannot, and must not, be undermined.
Moreover, safeguarding social cohesion is a necessary precondition if we are to achieve economic viability and if Europe is to get back on the path to growth and social prosperity, given that, as we all know, the economy and society are interlinked concepts and communicating vessels."@en1
