"Madam President, I would like to thank the rapporteur and the Commission for the documents provided, but would also like to point out once more that there is something wrong when working people’s wages are so low that they cannot survive on them and fall into poverty. This begs the question as to whether the Member States do not want or are unable to set an adequate or at least a minimum wage? I therefore turn to the Commissioner and call for a decision to be adopted as soon as possible on a minimum income for the whole European Union. I also warmly welcome the idea raised in the report that Member States should set adequate minimum pensions so that people who have worked all their lives are not trapped in poverty in old age. I would also like to draw attention to the fact that more often than not, it is women who live in poverty, and here we should adopt a decision as soon as possible on the care and nursing of family members because in such instances, women very often fall into poverty because they are unable to work."@en1
