"Madam President, Commissioner, ladies and gentlemen, I should like to begin by congratulating Mr Daerden on the quality and timeliness of his report, and Commissioner Andor on the initiatives announced.
Poverty is truly a very serious problem, and effective and rapid action is required to halt the increase of this phenomenon, which is currently affecting more than 80 million Europeans. The serious crisis we are experiencing has exacerbated this situation and made life very difficult for us, as Commissioner Andor said. The number of unemployed people continues to rise, and we all know that a lack of jobs is a passport to poverty and social exclusion.
This situation requires resources, will and a great deal of commitment from the European Commission and the Member States. If that does not happen, the target of pulling 20 million Europeans out of poverty during this decade will not be achieved.
I therefore warmly welcome the European platform against poverty and social exclusion, which is a very important instrument for ensuring social justice. However, no one doubts that the best remedies for poverty and social exclusion are the creation of jobs and the promotion of economic growth."@en1
