"Madam President, hundreds of millions of people in the EU are threatened by poverty and social exclusion and one-fifth of them are not able to meet their basic needs. They do not have enough money for food, housing and clothing. The European Year for Combating Poverty and Social Exclusion in 2010 raised awareness of the situation of the people affected and gave rise to a number of initiatives, including the creation of decent and dignified jobs, the introduction of minimum wage levels, access to affordable health care, campaigns in socially vulnerable regions and integration projects for immigrants. The Member States are primarily responsible for generating a sense of solidarity with the weakest members of our society. However, at a European level, it is all about financing and coordination. The European platform is part of the Europe 2020 strategy and is also one of seven flagship initiatives.
The austerity measures taken during the economic crisis, which are necessary to safeguard our future, must not put jobs and social protection at risk. We must go on making efforts to promote basic education, training and integration into the labour market. We are all responsible for ensuring that the poor do not lose out. Therefore, we must continue to take concrete action to put into practice our fundamental values of solidarity and justice, even in difficult times."@en1
