"Madam President, it is with great pleasure that I welcome today’s vote on the report on the European platform against poverty and social exclusion. I hope that a common legal basis will contribute to better coordination and increase the effectiveness of actions aimed at fighting poverty and helping the most needy. Especially in the difficult times of a crisis, which most affect the poorest people, who are often without savings or greater prospects, we must focus our attention on those who are most vulnerable. Governments of countries in search of budget savings tend to reduce spending on social assistance, which exacerbates further the situation facing these people. In Frédéric Daerden’s report, the proposal to create a basket of basic goods and services that would be available to everyone is particularly relevant. This solution would ensure a necessary minimum for each person and allow for a decent existence. At the same time, such a project must be accompanied by measures aimed at creating jobs, even for the low-skilled, and appropriate policies for social housing. The goals that we have set in the Europe 2020 strategy are ambitious, but feasible. If the theory and what we put on paper are followed by action taken by the governments of our Member States in collaboration with civil society organisations, we will be able to reduce the number of people remaining on the margins of society."@en1
