"Mr President, the history of the European Union is one of many, many poor compromises. These compromises have given rise to a very large number of deficiencies. When I demonstrated against the Treaty of Lisbon outside the Austrian cabinet offices in Vienna in 2008, my argument was that this Treaty cemented these deficiencies in place for years, if not decades, to come. This is precisely what has happened, as we can now see from the debate on treaty change.
This is not the moment for
however. We need to see to it that this crisis is used to achieve more deep-seated change. For this reason, I am saying a clear and resounding yes to a European convention, yes to a convention that is directly elected by our citizens, yes to a right of initiative for the European Parliament, yes to a Court of Justice with responsibility for subsidiarity, simply yes to more democracy and, above all, yes to referenda on this result."@en1
