"Mr President, the number and rate at which nuns and monks in Tibet are setting fire to themselves has reached alarming proportions. As someone who grew up under a communist dictatorship it is clear to me that the main reason for these tragedies is the atmosphere of fear and the lack of freedom imposed and maintained by the Chinese communist regime. As one of the oldest cultures in the world, Tibet deserves a lot more respect, freedom and independence than it is currently being given by the government in Beijing. The European Union and the Parliament must keep up the pressure on China to open bilateral negotiations with the representatives of Tibet headed by the Dalai Lama. Even just a hint in this direction would significantly reduce the tension and give all Tibetans some hope. The benefits of such a decision would be immediately felt throughout the region of Tibet and would consign these tragic self-immolations to history."@en1
