Each year, 25 000 patients die in the EU from an infection caused by resistant micro-organisms. Given that antimicrobial resistance is an ever increasing threat to public health, I consider that, alongside the monitoring and surveillance of antimicrobial resistance, there should also be increased cooperation and funding to encourage research and development with regard to new antimicrobial agents.
Bearing in mind the inappropriate use of antimicrobial medicines, which creates favourable conditions for resistant micro-organisms, I support the request for action to significantly reduce the use of antibiotics."@en1
