"− The decision by a Ukrainian court to sentence former Prime Minister Yulia Tymoshenko to seven years’ imprisonment has disappointed the European Union. Such steps are reminiscent of how the authoritarian President of Belarus, Alexander Lukashenko, deals with political opponents. I agree with the EU’s assessment that the Ukrainian court dealing with Yulia Tymoshenko’s case failed to meet the international standards of fairness, transparency and independence applied to judicial proceedings. This trial has dealt a severe blow to EU-Ukraine relations, which are particularly sensitive now that negotiations on an Association Agreement have been concluded. Any improvement in relations will also depend on how events relating to the former Prime Minster unfold. Reform of the criminal code and the judicial system in Ukraine should be accelerated. I also voted in favour of this resolution because I support the rapporteur’s call for the Tymoshenko case not to place any fundamental obstacles in the way of Ukraine’s integration into Europe. We call for the signing of the EU-Ukraine Association and Free Trade Agreement in December not to be postponed."@en1
