"I abstained from voting on this resolution, which expresses deep concern over the situation of Christian communities. On this matter, the Confederal Group of the European United Left – Nordic Green Left has tabled a resolution with a very different message.
I take no issue with defending the right of Coptic Christians to freely practise their religion without being subjected to the slightest aggression and without running the risk of being imprisoned or, worse still, killed.
However, human rights cannot be defended if we have double standards. Murders and human rights violations are a daily reality in Syria, and the situation in Egypt is far from stable.
The EU should not defend any particular community. It should not discriminate but, rather, defend freedom of thought, conscience, religion and, more broadly, public freedoms and democracy without making any distinctions. It is this truly universal conception of human rights that I support."@en1
