". − I voted in favour of this important resolution, which encourages the EU to continue to support the efforts aimed at accelerating democratic, economic and social reforms in Egypt. We, Members of the European Parliament, strongly condemn the killing of protestors in Egypt and welcome efforts by Egyptian authorities to identify the perpetrators of the attacks on Christian communities, while stressing the importance of an independent investigation by an independent civil judiciary. We call on the Egyptian authorities to ensure full respect for all fundamental rights, including freedom of association, peaceful assembly, freedom of expression and freedom of religion, conscience and thought for all citizens in Egypt. We believe that a new Constitution should explicitly provide for the protection of all fundamental rights. In regards to Syria we express our deepest concern regarding the human rights violations perpetrated by the Syrian authorities and reiterate our call on President Bashar al-Assad and his regime to relinquish power immediately and allow a democratic transition to take place in Syria. Respect for human rights and fundamental freedoms in Syria is of great importance and we welcome the commitment of the EU to continue to press for strong UN action to increase international pressure."@en1
